With NFL training camps underway, the league is abuzz with position battles, injury news and rookies making an immediate impact. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NFL beat. Finding a New Holme? According to ESPNs Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears worked out free agent wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Ben Obamanu on Tuesday. The Bears are looking to add depth to the wide receiver position after projected No. 3 Marquess Wilson underwent surgery to repair a broken collarbone. Wilson is projected to return at some point in the regular season, though no timetable has been set. Holmes spent last season with the New York Jets and had 23 receptions for 456 yards and one touchdown in 11 games. He has not had a 1,000 yard season since he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009, he was traded the following offseason to the Jets. Obamanu was cut by the Jets in October and not picked up by any other team. His most productive seasons came with the Seattle Seahawks in 2010 and 2011; he had over 400 yards in each of those seasons. The Bears roster currently features receivers Eric Weems, Chris Williams, Josh Morgan, Michael Spurlock, Armanti Edwards, Josh Bellamy and Dale Moss all fighting for roles behind Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey. Coach Marc Trestman indicated during his press conference on Tuesday that another receiver would be signed by Thursday. Striding to a Start? Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland thinks Tuesdays Browns practice could be "regarded as the day the light went on for Johnny Manziel." Manziel split time with Brian Hoyer working with the first-team offence, but had one of his best showings to date. ESPN Cleveland reports Manziel went 15-for-27 passing, finishing practice with an over 50 per cent completion rate for just the second time in camp. Coach Mike Pettine admitted after practice the former Texas A&M star is "making strides." Manziel took first-team reps for the third straight day on Wednesday. Hoyer will start Saturdays preseason game for the Browns, but the reports on Manziel have entirely positive since he stood out in last Saturdays team scrimmage. Turning to Teddy The Minnesota Vikings plan to give rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater first-team snaps at some point in the preseason. Matt Cassel was listed as the teams starting quarterback on their first depth chart and is expected start the teams opening preseason game but Bridgewater will be given a chance to pass Cassel in the starting race. The Vikings traded up to select Bridgewater 32nd overall in Mays draft and appear to have confidence in the Louisville product. "We need to play Teddy with the first line," offensive coordinator Norv Turner said Tuesday. "We need to mix a lot of players. I think were still trying to work that out in terms of how we want to do it. I know Coach [Mike] Zimmer has a plan in place. It will be a number of plays, and we want to see Teddy play. He needs to play to get through that the first time going out." ESPNs Ben Goessling reports Bridgewater had a strong day in practice on Monday, completing 8-of-10 passes in the 11-on-11 drill with the second-team offence. Sitting Sam The St. Louis Rams will not having starting quarterback Sam Bradford when they open their preseason against the New Orleans Saints on Friday. Bradford will sit out for precautionary reasons as he works his way back from a torn ACL, which he tore in Week 7. Bradford is expected to be in full health for Week 1 of the regular season. Hugo Ayala Jersey . Mission accomplished. Now the Royals will take the field on Saturday with a World Series lead for the first time in team history when they play Game 4 of the Fall Classic against the Giants at AT&T Park. Miguel Layun Jersey . - Zac Leslie scored two goals and assisted on two more, and Justin Nichols made 34 saves as the Guelph Storm blanked the Kitchener Rangers 6-0 in Ontario Hockey League action on Sunday. http://www.nationalsoccermexico.com/javier-hernandez-mexico-jersey/ . The Rangers centre left early in Game 1 with an upper body injury after being checked by Canadiens defenceman Mike Weaver and has not played since. Brassard told reporters after practice that he was good to go. That brought a smile to the face of Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. Hirving Lozano Mexico Jersey . Here at TSN.ca we will take a look back at the season by bringing together a panel of experts to help pick the best 50 players of the season. Jonathan dos Santos Mexico Jersey .com) - Jahlil Okafor had 21 points, Tyus Jones scored 16 with 10 assists and No.As Randy Carlyle watched Team Canada clinch their second consecutive Olympic gold medal early Sunday morning, it was the way in which they went about achieving success - a complete defensive domination surrendering just three goals against in six games - which piqued his interest most. "I looked at it and I hope our players understand that defense does win, thats the simplest statement you can make," said the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach on Monday. If there is a goal for the Leafs over their remaining 22 games, it should be to clamp down defensively. Throughout the season, they have routinely been outshot, allowing 40 or more shots on 16 different occasions, and a league high 2175, 146 more than the next highest team, the Ottawa Senators. Of their 32 wins, the Maple Leafs lead the NHL with 25 wins in games that they have been outshot. A large part of their success has come from excellent goaltending and their ability to outscore their defensive issues, sitting behind only the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most goals scored in the Eastern Conference. But come playoff time, it is often the best defensive teams that emerge victorious. "We know that we can score goals as a team so if we can tighten up a little bit our defence, we feel were going to be a tough team to beat," said Jonathan Bernier, who has faced the third-most shots in the NHL this season. "I think that youve seen that over a long time, not just in that tournament, that good defensive teams have success," added captain Dion Phaneuf. "When you play good defence, it means you have the puck more and that generates more offence. Thats a fair statement when you say defence wins, its been like that for a long time." Team Canadas defence was made effective, primarily by the cohesion featured among the five playeers on the ice at any given time, and the relentless nature in which forwards back checked.dddddddddddd While that system was executed by some of the finest players in the game, strong defensive skills are not like offensive talent. When it comes to scoring goals, some players simply have more of a knack at it than others but, as Dave Bolland explained, there should be no excuse for poor defensive play. "Defence is about commitment," he said. "I know coming into the NHL, my defensive skills were terrible, and I admit that. But I learned that defence wins you games. I sort of took a hold of that and set it up as my third-line role." Bollands impending return (he, like last week, remained coy today about the potential of dressing against the New York Islanders this Thursday) should help lead the way in terms of defensive commitment. In 15 games before going down with the severed tendon in his left ankle, Bolland showed himself to be among the Leafs top defensive forwards. "I learned a lot about back checking when I got into the league," said Bolland. "When I was in juniors, you didnt even think about coming back. Once I got up to the NHL, you learn backchecking is crucial. The first guy I learned that from was Marian Hossa. You see that guy backcheck, he corrupts [sic] a lot of puck and he corrupts [sic] a lot of sticks, hes always back in the right spots." For an example of the style of play he hopes his players can work toward, Carlyle looked no further than the gold medal game itself. "In that game, it was played at a very high pace, but defence, probably on both hockey clubs, was very evident in the way they approached it and how they tried to set up their defensive schemes," he explained. "On the big ice surface, it doesnt look as ' ' '
