(SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to rebound from a loss in the opener of the Eastern Conference second round series when they host the rival New York Rangers in Sundays Game 2 from CONSOL Energy Center. New York placed second in the Metropolitan Division this season, finishing 13 points behind the Penguins, but the Rangers were able to strike first in this best-of-seven set, taking Game 1 by a 3-2 score in overtime. Derick Brassard scored at 3:06 of the extra session to lift the Rangers to victory, although the end of the game was far from conventional. Brassard knew he scored off a feed from Benoit Pouliot, but the game went on. Seconds later, with the Penguins still scrambling around in their zone, Brassard set up Pouliot for what appeared to be the winning goal. However, the original shot by Brassard was reviewed and showed the puck clearly going underneath the crossbar and inside the left post. Because the puck sprung back out so quickly, it wasnt evident that it was a good goal and play continued, albeit momentarily. "It was all (Pouliots) play," Brassard said. "First of all, he cut (off) the pass behind the net and right away he found me in front of the net. At first, I thought it went in. I thought it went under the bar and the ref said it wasnt in. The puck came back to me and (Pouliot) was open. It was a great feeling." New York opened a playoff series with an OT win for the first time since Game 1 of the Patrick Division Finals on Apr. 17, 1986 at Washington . The Blueshirts have won eight of the last 10 playoff series in which they won Game 1, including four of the last six playoff series in which they won Game 1 on the road. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves for the Rangers, including one on Lee Stempniak in the final 11 seconds of regulation. New York won a Game 7 at home against Philadelphia on Wednesday to advance to the second round for the third consecutive year. The Flyers and Rangers had played Game 6 in Philly on Tuesday, so Fridays tilt was New Yorks third test in three different cities over the span of four days. When the Rangers host Pittsburgh in Game 3 on Monday it will mark five games in seven days for New York. Despite New Yorks recent workload and the fact that the Penguins had three days off ahead of Fridays opener, the home club was the team that looked flat for large stretches of Game 1. "For whatever reason, we didnt come out hard enough," said Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby. "I thought those goals in the second definitely gave us a boost. I thought from there on we had some good chances. Pretty even after that." Stempniak and James Neal scored second-period goals for Pittsburgh, which outshot the visitors by a 36-27 margin in the loss. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24-of-27 shots for the Pens after struggling at times during his teams first- round win over Columbus. "They got the first one tonight. Its disappointing, but (we) got to have a short memory," said Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play. The Rangers have failed to score 25 straight times with the man advantage dating back to its first-round series against Philadelphia. The Penguins have won all four previous playoff series with the Rangers. After Fridays loss, Pittsburgh fell to 16-5 all-time against New York in the postseason. Pittsburgh defenceman Brooks Orpik missed Game 1 with an undisclosed injury and he is questionable for Game 2. Orpik also sat out Game 6 against Columbus and Robert Bortuzzo could fill in for him on Sunday for a third straight game. Christian Kirk Cardinals Jersey . Both had to wait out a rain interruption lasting nearly five hours before taking comprehensive third-round victories to join Carling Bassett-Seguso (1983, 1986), Patricia Hy-Boulais (1996-97) and Daniel Nestor (1999) as Canadians who made it into the second week of a major. The team said Saturday that the 36-year-old Robidas is expected to miss four to six months, jeopardizing his return this season. He was injured when he slid hard into the boards in the second period of a 2-1 shootout loss to Chicago on Friday. Josh Rosen Jersey . With their coach gone, they finally played offence the way he would have wanted. Amare Stoudemire made all seven shots in the first half, Anthony passed and shot well, and the Knicks shook off the surprising departure of their coach to rout the Portland Trail Blazers 121-79 on Wednesday night, snapping a six-game losing streak. Andre Smith Cardinals Jersey . -- Wichita State is all alone in the record book.HOUSTON -- Giles Barnes scored twice in the first half and Will Bruin added a goal in the second half to lead the Houston Dynamo to a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night. The win was the second in three games for the Dynamo (10-7-6), while Seattle (10-8-4) saw its four-game unbeaten streak end in U.S. national team captain Clint Dempseys his first start for the Sounders. Barnes gave the Dynamo a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Bruin kept the ball alive before it reached the end line then fed it back to Barnes, who sent a shot from 14 yards out in the left box that found the upper right corner. Five minutes later, Barnes made it 2-0 with a blast from 30 yards out in the middle of the field that went just inside the far post, giving him his first multi-goal game. Barnes said the Dynamo came out of the blocks flying, and it was important for Houston to get off to a good start at home. "When you get the first goal in any game, you look to get the second goal to try to kill their vibe, knock the wind out of their sails," Barnes said. "We thought that if we did that, it would give them a tough hill to try to climb." Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said the first 30 minutes of the game were probably the best 30 minutes the Dynamo have played all year. "We looked excellent," Kinnear said. "Giles scored a good goal and followed it up with a great goal. We were excellent on both sides of the ball. If we lost it, we hunted it down. I think the two goals we scored, it came from winning the ball and playing it forward. We were very aggressive with our overall play on both sides of the ball. Giles found good little gaps in the midfields." Shalrie Joseph cut the lead in half in the 65th minute, heading Marc Burchs free kick inside the near post from inside the goalkeeperrs box.dddddddddddd. Dempsey took his first shot in the first minute when he sent one wide left from the right box. He had a header saved in the 25th minute and another shot in the 35th minute, a low liner from the middle of the box that goalkeeper Tally Hall easily corralled. Dempsey sent one from the upper box wide in the 81st minute. Dempsey, who is from Nacogdoches, Texas, had family and friends in attendance. He said it was good to play a full 90 minutes. "This was the first 90 minutes Ive had in a long time," Dempsey said. "I thought we created enough chances tonight that we should have scored more goals. I had some good looks, I should have put one away. But we had chances, so Im not frustrated with that aspect." Bruin scored in the 74th minute to extend Houstons lead to 3-1. Warren Creavalles shot from the middle of the box hit off the cross bar and bounced to Brad Davis, who fed Bruin 8 yards out. He turned and sent one into the middle of the net. Lamar Neagle missed a chance to get Seattle within one in the 80th minute when his shot from the right box hit the far post but stayed on the end line and Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall was able to bat it out. Seattle head coach Siegfried Schmid said his team gave up some early goals, but they fought and battled back, and if they would have finished their opportunities, the result could have been different. "I thought our body language early in the game wasnt good," Schmid said. "We handed them opportunities early. The first goal was a little bit of a mistake on our part. Second goal that guy hits a great goal. There was nothing you could do. After that I thought we were in as much of the game as they were. Its easily a game that couldve been 3-3 or 4-4 based on the chances we had if we finish our chances."
